Half to start, half when it goes live. Both prices are flat, quoted before any work begins, and anything unusual gets scoped and priced first rather than billed later.

The sites are static, so there is no server to rent.
Every engagement ends owned by the people who run it. The domain is yours and so is the code, and nothing is built on a platform you would have to buy your way out of.

How it works
You write
Your web address, what you have now, and what you want. You get which of the two prices above applies within a day, not in a proposal a week later. Fifteen minutes on the phone if you would rather talk it through: say so and I will call you.
You send what you have
Photos, hours, prices, anything you want kept. If your current site already has it, I pull it across myself. This is the step that decides how fast the rest goes.
You see it before anyone else does
The finished site goes up on a temporary address first, while your real one keeps running untouched. Nothing points at the new site until you have looked at it and said so.
It goes live
The address moves over and the old subscription gets cancelled. The domain and the code are yours, and I keep running the hosting so you never have to think about it.
Questions
How is hosting free? What is the catch?
The sites are static, so there is no server sitting there costing money. Serving one costs me a fraction of a cent, which is not worth billing for. The site is yours either way, so nothing here is a hold over you.
I already have someone who handles my website.
Then keep them. This is a one-time build, not a retainer, and what you end up with is an ordinary website on standard tools that any developer can pick up.
What happens to my web address and my email?
The address stays yours the whole time; it just starts pointing somewhere faster. Email runs on separate settings and keeps working through the move.
Do I need to know anything technical?
No. Some sites are set up so you can make your own edits if you want to, and if you would rather send me a text message, a small change is $35.
Will I lose my Google ranking?
The old addresses are pointed at the matching new pages so links and search results keep working, and pages that load faster are treated better, not worse.
Where are you, and does it matter?
Westfield, Massachusetts, and no. A site gets built the same way whether you are down the road or three time zones out, and either way most of it happens over the phone and by email. Being nearby just means meeting in person is easy when it helps.
What if I want something more than this?
Say so in the first email. What is priced above is a fast, well-made, ordinary website, and most businesses are right to want exactly that. Two things put a project outside it: a site that has to do real work rather than present information, and wanting the other thing entirely, every decision argued and every detail worked over. Both get scoped on their own, and they are the work I most want to do.
